Accessing Self-Help Groups

Although Gamblers Anonymous and Gam-Anon have been supporting gamblers and their families for over 65 years, the spiritual approach of GA may not appeal to everyone. Today, there are numerous alternatives available, including Smart Recovery, Bettors Anonymous, Celebrate Recovery, Adult Children of Alcoholics, Recovery Anonymous, All Addictions Anonymous, Recovery Dharma, Recovering Couples Anonymous, and Gamblersinrecovery.com, among others. While many of these options are also spiritually based, there are some secular choices. This workshop will examine the similarities and differences among these programs and discuss how clinicians can assist their clients in finding a meeting that aligns with their personal beliefs.
